Documenting the Real Impact of Cambodia’s Cashew Industry

If you were to approach a random person on the street and ask what they know about cashew nut plantations in Cambodia, few would realize that Cambodia is one of the world’s leading producers of raw cashew nuts.
In recent years, the nation has consistently ranked among the top global exporters, with production figures reaching hundreds of thousands of metric tons. For many rural Khmer families, cashews represent a golden crop that provides a vital livelihood.
However, being a top exporter is only part of the journey. The real challenge lies in ensuring this agricultural growth is sustainable, climate-resilient, and directly beneficial to the smallholder farmers who form the backbone of the industry.
At iMPACT Story, we believe every major milestone in sustainable development deserves a compelling voice. That is why we partnered with HEKS/EPER to document their project achievements in strengthening the Cambodian cashew value chain.
Our documentary production crew traveled to the heart of the cashew-growing regions in Kampong Thom and Preah Vihear provinces to capture the human stories behind this agricultural evolution.
The HEKS/EPER Green Cashew Project is a visionary initiative designed to empower smallholder farmers by boosting incomes, building climate resilience, and establishing inclusive supply chains. Throughout our production journey, we witnessed firsthand how innovative, eco-friendly techniques are transforming local livelihoods.
For local farmers like Nouch Khun, the shift to sustainable practices went far beyond numbers on a balance sheet, it reshaped their daily reality:
"Before we joined the project, we used chemicals to eliminate pests. When we calculated the costs, we didn't make much profit because the pesticides were very expensive. When the project came, they brought techniques and had us use natural methods, such as Bordeaux mixture and seaweed liquid."
Partnering with HEKS/EPER on these impact stories was a natural extension of our mission at iMPACT Story. Our goal has always been to go beyond “just making a video” and amplify the voices of those driving real change across Cambodia and the region.
By documenting the journey of these cashew farmers, we hope to highlight that sustainable development is possible when innovation meets local expertise. We are honored to have played a role in sharing these stories of sacrifice, survival, and hope.
