iMPACT STORY Runs Three-Day Intensive Mobile Filmmaking Workshop in Kratie
- Phearum Sorn
- March 6, 2025
The air still buzzes with the energy of shared stories and newfound skills. We’re taking this moment to reflect on the incredible journey of our recent Mobile Filmmaking Workshop for Mekong Indigenous Women & Youths, funded by OXFAM. What began as an ambitious vision to equip participants with the tools to tell their own stories has blossomed into a vibrant tapestry of voices ready to be heard.
Between March 6th to March 8th, 2025, we witnessed the power of connection and learning unfold. The workshop took place at the beautiful Koh Trong Ecotourism Community, Kratie, which gave participants plenty of inspiration to practice and create.
Participants, selected from various backgrounds and provinces like Steung Treng, Kratie, and Ratanakiri, shared a common need for a stronger foundation in using their mobile phones for storytelling and videography. This perfectly matched our workshop’s goal of empowering them as effective storytellers to document their community issues and perspectives from an indigenous lens.

Over the course of 3 intensive days, participants were able to get a better understanding of mastering various mobile filmmaking techniques and delving into the art of impactful storytelling. The workshop includes lectures, short film screenings, group discussions, and practice sessions relating to creating videos using their smartphones. Moreover, as part of their workshop exit ticket, participants were split into teams to create a short film about the topic of their choice, as well as present it to the whole group. This is a great chance for everyone to reflect on their learning and use it in a real scenario. At the end, the participants embraced every challenge with remarkable enthusiasm and dedicated themselves to use these skills in their community.
“I’m really surprised by how much I’ve learned, especially since I’ve never joined a workshop like this before. I want to thank the facilitators and the organization that funded this opportunity for allowing me to be part of this experience. I’m excited to take what I’ve learned and use it to support my own community.”
The workshop wasn’t just about learning how to frame a shot or edit a sequence; it was about empowering these talented people to document the issues and perspectives that matter most to their communities along the vital Mekong River. The culmination of the workshop, the creation of short films, was a powerful testament to their learning and creativity. Each of their video creations at the end of the workshop offered a unique window into their worlds, tackling important community issues with courage and insight. These weren’t just videos; they were acts of self-representation, offering perspectives often overlooked and demanding to be seen and heard.

“Everything I learned in this workshop has been exciting and completely new to me. The lessons were fun and engaging, and I really enjoyed working as a team and putting all the skills I gained over the past few days into practice.”
We at iMPACT Story are deeply inspired by the broader impact of this initiative. We’ve witnessed a tangible increase in the capacity of these indigenous communities to harness the power of mobile technology for storytelling and advocacy. This workshop wasn’t an endpoint; it was a catalyst. It has ignited a spark, empowering individuals to continue creating, documenting, and sharing their narratives for years to come.
We would like to thank OXFAM for their invaluable support in making this vision a reality. Their commitment to empowering marginalized communities aligns perfectly with our mission at iMPACT Story. Together, we’ve created a space for voices to rise, for stories to be told, and for a more equitable and understanding world to emerge.
