Hirokazu Kore-eda to Join Historic Event with Cambodian Filmmaker

This month marks an unparalleled moment for Cambodian cinema and cultural exchange. The event, “Special Feature: A Mini Retrospective on Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Film,” in conjunction with the Japanese Film Festival in Cambodia, is not just an introduction to Japanese cinema, it’s the stage for a historic event designed to bridge the gap between two dynamic film cultures.

Japanese cinema, renowned globally for its depth and innovation, often lacks visibility in Cambodia. This event aims to correct that, offering a deep dive into the work of one of its most compassionate storytellers, Hirokazu Kore-eda. Special Feature: A Mini Retrospective on Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Film, structured to be immersive, culminating in a professional exchange that will be remembered for years to come. 

The event will take place on December 13, 2025, at the Institut Français du Cambodge (IFC), starting at 10:00 a.m. It is held in collaboration with Mr. Chandara So, a participant in the 2024 ASEAN-Japan Film Programmers and Curators Project organized by the Japan Foundation.

Film Screenings (10:00am – 5:40pm) 

The day starts with a special film screening of three titles; Still Walking, Shoplifters and Monster, directed by a renowned Japanese film director Hirokazu Kore-eda. His films are famous for making you feel deep emotions and truly connect with the characters. 

  1. Title: Still Walking

  3. Title: Monster
    • Time: 13 December, Saturday_15:30-17:40

All films are with English subtitles.

Film Talk (6:00pm – 7:30pm)

The excitement will reach a peak during the Film Talk Event, a historic opportunity for Cambodian audiences. While physically separated by distance, the esteemed director Hirokazu Kore-eda will be joining the event via a live online connection!

This session will transform the viewing experience into an interactive educational event. This film talk event will be joined by the highly respected Cambodian and Japanese filmmakers:

  • Hirokazu Kore-eda (Via Online) – Globally acclaimed Japanese director
  • Davy Chou – Internationally recognized French Cambodian director and producer
  • Tamaki Tsuchida – Japanese film programmer
  • Darung Mony – Cambodian filmmaker
  • Chandara So – Programmer/Moderator
