Empowering Cambodia’s Bold New Scriptwriters

On September 16th, 2024, KUDU Studios partnered with the Japan Foundation Phnom Penh Liaison Office to bring emerging Cambodian scriptwriters the opportunity to flourish their script writing skills called Script Accelerator Lab.
Script Accelerator (one-week-intensive) Lab is organized with the goal of providing an invaluable opportunity for Cambodian emerging scriptwriters to enhance their scripts writing skill through personalized feedback and guidance from esteemed Japanese and Cambodian script mentors, alongside insightful guest speakers. The participants will engage in a rich cultural exchange, delving into the distinct storytelling techniques that characterize both Japanese and Cambodian cinema.
The lab received over 21 different projects submitted by Cambodian emerging Scriptwriters, each with a script ready for development. They come from diverse backgrounds and have varying experiences in the film industry.
Six projects were chosen to be a part of the lab as they are the best fits for the lab and align well with the program prepared. Nine participants, each representing one of the selected projects, have been chosen to be part of the Script Accelerator Lab. These nine individuals have developed their passion for scriptwriting from various backgrounds.
The Lab starts off with a friendly introduction from the organizer and participants. It’s very crucial for the fellow participants to get to know the program as well as each other so they can feel comfortable in doing group work as well as if needed assistance from the organizer. Throughout the week, the lab offers the participants with numerous creative sessions and activities that would build upon their cohesive script writing skill as well as empower their creativity.
The lab includes programs such as lecture sessions from both mentors & guests, break-out sessions, group discussion, film screening and analysis, film location visit, and project presentation. All of the programs are collectively designed with the goal of training the emerging Cambodian scriptwriter into an expert that further expands the filmmaking industry in Cambodia.
The participants were very eager to engage with the programs and make sure they are making the best of their time with the fellow Japanese and Cambodian mentors. The mix of smiles, laughter, and applause throughout the day clearly demonstrates the enthusiasm and enjoyment of the Script Accelerator Lab as it progresses.
During the last day of the lab, participants each share their reflection toward their growth after the lab and how much impact this event has upon their career.

We at KUDU Studios believe that crafting a good narrative means more than just writing lines of words and dialogue of what the character is gonna say. It’s used as a centerpiece in telling actions, settings, and emotional beats that guide throughout the story.
Cambodia is amongst countries that continue to make its way to the big stage. With more film makers arising every year, the community of script writers coming from all across the nation are eager to take on any opportunity and join the available events relating to script writing.
The event was a huge success in delivering effective training and assembling a group of talented Cambodia Scriptwriters to polish their skills in making sure they’re on the path to success. We’re confident that these emerging scriptwriters will continue to grow on their own and we will be here to continue guiding these emerging scriptwriters in order to make sure they are on the way to achieve marvelous things. Script Accelerator Lab fosters a great impact on the scriptwriting community in Cambodia.
