Learn More about Kūdu

The name Kūdu is a powerful symbol from ancient Khmer architectural art, carrying a rich meaning that perfectly aligns with our Cambodia-based production house. The phenomenal connection between this name, our company’s vision, and our cultural roots is at the heart of our identity. The meaning of “Kūdu” as a “nest” is a powerful metaphor for us: it represents a place where things are created, nurtured, and brought to life. At Kūdu STUDIOS, we foster a similar environment, a place where creative ideas are born and where we are passionate about bringing every vision to life.

What does Kūdu mean in Khmer history?

Kūdu referred to “Nest” which, derivative from the word “Tamul”, symbolized the superiority of the nest which was always on the top (AMS Khmer Civilization, 2021).

Where could we find it?
  • Kūdu sculptures in Khmer art were well-known and appeared in the Pre-Angkorian between the 6th and late 8th centuries (AMS Khmer Civilization, 2021).
  • In Indian art, the Kūdu design is nail-shaped and often used as a decorative element on wall beams or temple roots. It is typically placed on or near the entrance, particularly in cave temples where workshops take place (AMS Khmer Civilization, 2021).
What does it look like?

There are three types of Kūdu sculptures, and one type often features carving of human heads or deities inside. With this shape, it is commonly found in Khmer art, especially in Sambor Prei Kuk and Prei Khmeng styles (AMS Khmer Civilization, 2021).

Our Clients & Partners

"Chandara was my local fixer/producer in the country. He helped me with all the pre-production work: film permissions for Angkor Wat, arranging a homestay on the Tonlé Sap lake, suggestions for stories. I have worked with several fixers, but Chandara is the best fixer I ever experienced!"
